Gloves don't die from punching. They die in the bottom of a gym bag, wet, zipped in the dark — the exact environment bacteria dream about. The entire art of glove care is one idea: get them dry, fast, every single session.
The after-every-session routine (2 minutes)
- Pull them out of the bag the moment you get home. Never store them in it.
- Wipe the inside liner with a dry cloth or paper towel.
- Wipe the outside with a barely-damp cloth, then dry.
- Open the wrist strap fully and let them air with the cuff wide open — hang them upside down if you can.
- In humid climates (hello, Thailand), point a fan at them or stuff loosely with newspaper.
Weekly
- Antibacterial spray (or 50/50 water and white vinegar) inside — light mist, then dry fully.
- An hour of indirect sun. UV kills bacteria; all-day direct sun cooks leather, so don't overdo it.
- Leather conditioner on the outside once a month if the shell is real leather.
What kills gloves
- Living in the gym bag (the #1 cause, by far).
- Machine washing or soaking.
- Radiators and hair dryers — heat cracks leather and warps foam.
- Skipping hand wraps: wraps absorb the sweat that otherwise goes straight into the liner.
Gloves beyond saving? Here's what to replace them with.
Frequently asked
- Can I machine-wash boxing gloves?
- No. Water soaks the foam, the leather stiffens and cracks, and the glue lets go. Surface-wipe and air-dry only.
- My gloves already smell terrible — can they be saved?
- Mostly. A week of aggressive drying (stuffed with newspaper, changed daily), sun for an hour or two, and antibacterial spray inside knocks back most smells. If the liner has blackened and the smell returns in a day, the bacteria colony has won — replace them.
- Do glove deodorizers work?
- Cedar or bamboo-charcoal inserts genuinely help because they dry the glove — moisture is the root cause. Sprays alone mask the smell without fixing it.
